About HSK
Chinese Proficiency Test, Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi in Chinese,also known as HSK, is a standardized test designed and launched by Hanban under the Chinese Ministry of Education to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers.
Functions of HSK Certificates
•To certify that you have obtained the required Chinese proficiency to enter a college or university in China as an undergraduate or graduate student;
•To certify that you have obtained the required Chinese proficiency and thus may be exempted from taking certain Chinese language courses in your institution (if your institution agrees);
•To serve as a reference when you apply for a job position that requires a certain level of Chinese competency;
•To test your Chinese proficiency if you are learning the language.
Types of HSK and a descriptive statement of the tests:
1) HSK Level I
Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level I) can understand and use very simple Chinese phrases, meet basic needs for communication and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies. 150 basic Chinese words as well as the corresponding rules of grammar.
2) HSK Level II
Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level II) have an excellent grasp of basic Chinese and can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.300 Chinese words as well as the corresponding rules of grammar.
3) HSK Level III
Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level III) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. They can manage most communication in Chinese when travelling in China.600 Chinese words as well as the corresponding rules of grammar.
4) HSK Level IV
Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level IV) can converse in Chinese on a wide range of topics and are able to communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers. 1200 Chinese words as well as the corresponding rules of grammar.
5) HSK Level V
Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level V) can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and plays, and give a full-length speech in Chinese.2500 Chinese words as well as the corresponding rules of grammar.
6) HSK Level VI
Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level VI) can easily comprehend written and spoken information in Chinese and can effectively express themselves in Chinese, both orally and on paper. More than 5000 Chinese words as well as the corresponding rules of grammar.
